Nur Ratnakar

ITC-SRA has completed a unique Research Project to compile a bio-bibliographical survey of all accessible important writings on music, dance and theatre, in Sanskrit, Arabic, Persian, Turkish, Deshi, Apabhramsa, Brajbhasha and Urdu. The late Prof. Shahab Sarmadee of Aligarh conducted this survey, titled ‘Nur-Ratnakar’ in two parts.

Prof. Shahab Sarmadee was the only eminent musicologist in India who was an authority on Sanskrit as well as on the Persian and Arabic sources of the history of music. Volume I of this survey covers the social and cultural evolution from Panini’s time till 1399 A.D. It treads on hitherto uncharted terrain in the history of Indian Classical music and also critically examines well-known classics like the Natyashastra, Brihaddesi and Sangeetratnakar.
