Born on December 25, 1902, Jnanendra Prasad Goswami was an evocative name in the music world of Bengal. A renowned exponent of the Bishnupur Gharana, Goswami added his genius to the idiom of this gharana, and evolved a style all his own. A born singer, he drew heavily on the heritage of the family he was born into. His father was Bipin Chandra, a skilled esraj player but it was his uncle, Radhika Prasad Goswami, a great vocalist of his times, who took on the task of training his young nephew. Goswami subsequently trained under stalwarts such as Girija Shankar Chakrabarty and Ustad Faiyaz Khan.
A close friend of Kazi Nazrul Islam, Goswami popularized Raagpradhan and Nazrul Geeti in Bengal. He died on October 29, 1945
