He or she should, therefore, learn all the requirements of a successful performer, beginning with the requirements of stagecraft, like tuning the instruments, using of microphone properly, and positioning the accompanists suitably.

  2. A scholar must clearly understand the basic ragas and the underlying theory of raga.
  3. Every scholar must be able to read and write the notation.
  4. He or she should thoroughly know the lyrics of the compositions.

Necessary requirements for upgradation

Grade B (20 Ragas) :
    20 Ragas
    2 Dhrupads
2 Thumris or Dadras or Bhajans

Grade B+ (30 Ragas) :
    4 Dhrupads
    2 Dhamars
4 Thumris or Dadras or Bhajans

Grade A (40 Ragas) :
    6 Dhrupads
    4 Dhamars
2 (each) Thumris, Dadras and Bhajans/light compositions.

Grade A+(50 Ragas) :
50 Ragas with all the requirements of Grade A and the ability of creating compositions.

The knowledge of a variety of compositions in each raga and the use of different taals in compositions are required in an increasing degree for each higher grade.

Discontinuation
If a scholar fails to show improvement in his or her standards in more than three consecutive gradation tests, then the training and scholarship may be automatically terminated. The candidate can rejoin ITC-SRA, but only through a fresh audition and without any relaxation in the age limit.
