Milestones
Ever since its inception, right into the 21st century, ITC-SRA has exemplified how the
traditional gurukul can thrive. Giving contemporary classical music a new direction, it
has, in its 27 years of existence, achieved many firsts, through its sangeet sammelans,
its seminars and its research programs alike.

ITC-SRA established the Western Regional Committee in
Mumbai in 1981 to promote its objectives in the culturally rich
territory around Maharastra and Gujarat. Under the inspiring leadership
of Shri Arvind Parekh, a trustee of ITC-SRA, and an eminent musician and
industrialist, the Western Regional Committee has left its indelible
musical imprint in the western states.
Each year, two eminent artistes from the Western region are awarded the
ITC Award from Mumbai. The two senior artistes selected for the awards
are as far as possible, a vocalist and an instrumentalist. In addition,
as part of its focus on the promotion of Indian Classical Music, the
Committee has, since 1998, been awarding prizes to four promising young
artistes selected from First Prize Winners of All India Radio
Competitions. Two of the selected awardees are from the North Indian
music system - one vocal and one instrumental and the remaining two are
from the Carnatic music system.
