‘Parampara’ – A Musical Journey’
On the 14th of February, 2010, a few scholars and gurus from the
ITC Sangeet Research Academy gave a memorable performance at a
concert hall in Uttarpara. Although the attendance was modest in
number, it was nothing short of a splendid night of enchanting
classical vocal and instrumental music.
The concert began with an ensemble of instrumentalists from the
Academy, in which both scholars and members of the faculty
performed. The performers were; Saket Sahu on the violin, Abir
Hossain on the sarod, Pt. Samar Saha on the tabla, Rupashree
Bhattacharya on the harmonium, and Supratik Sen gupta on the
sitar. A spell-binding rendition of Raga Saraswati was
performed, and was well-received by the audience. The next
performance was given by Pandit. Manilal Nag, a Guru at the
academy, and his student, Sourav Ganguly, on the sitar. They
gave a rendition of Raga Maru Bihag. The final performance was
given by Pt. Ulhas Kashalkar, also a Guru at the academy and
recently a recipient of the prestigious Padma Shri Award given
by the government of India. Pandit Ulhas Kashalkar completely
mesmerized and captivated the audience with his rendition of
Raga Kamod, in which he sang bandishes in vilambit, ‘Kaaray
Jaanay Na Doongi’ in drut teentaal, and a short rendition of
raga Basant, in which he sang a bandish, ‘Payaliya Jhankar’ in
drut teentaal. .
