ITC Sangeet Sammelan - Mumbai 2008
The
ITC Sangeet Sammelan, Mumbai was held at theYashwant Natya
Mandir, Matunga on January 19 and 20, 2008. The Sammelan paid
homage to the memory of the legendary Sangeet Maharishi Pandit
Vishnu Digambar Paluskar, on the occasion of the centenary of
the Gandharva Mahavidyalaya, the school that he established in
Mumbai a hundred years ago. A towering figure in the field of
music, Pandit Vishnu Digambar Paluskar was a great musician and
teacher, a man of uncompromising moral courage and a visionary.
His most notable task was the opening of Hindustani music to
amateurs, bringing it out of the courts of the ruling classes
and making it available to everyone, for traditionally it was
almost impossible for outsiders to enter into the clannish
monopolies of the ustads. Gandharva Mahavidyalaya was the first
school run by a middle class musician without the direct
patronage of rajas and maharajas. The school was run by public
support, donations from the richer classes and funds raised by
the concerts of Vishnu Digambar - it was truly a school of the
people for the people. Paluskar was also the prime moving force
behind changing the social values attached to music and
musicians.
