SRA crowns
Sandhya
11 November 2005
It is only appropriate that ITC SRA should kick off the winter of
classical music with its 13th annual show starting on Friday – an event
that is eagerly awaited by music lovers. There is a new dimension given
to the Sammelan this year with the ITC Award going to Sandhya Mukherjee,
the nightingale who has reeled the adhunik scene for more than half a
century. But though she had fetched an unmatched reputation singing for
films and for music companies, her roots lay in the classical world with
the guidance she had received from maestros like Jamini Ganguly, Chinmoy
Lahiri and A T Kanan. She had also imbibed her musical skills from the
great Bade Ghulam Ali Khan and after his death, from Munawar Ali Khan
and continued to sung in the Patiala tradition.
