Basant marks the advent of spring and the end of the long winter.  The festival of Basant Panchami is celebrated on the fifth day of Magha (Jan- Feb).  This day is specially dedicated to Saraswati, the Goddess of learning, wisdom and fine arts.  Celebrating the onset of spring, Basant marks the beginning of new life on earth.  Taking its cue from the mustard flowers blooming in wild abandon, the colour of the season is yellow.

The gaiety and festive spirit that marks Basant is also to be experienced in the mood of the ragas associated with this season.  Joyousness and high spirits abound.
