Since
its inception, ITC Sangeet Research Academy has nursed and
promoted talents in Hindustani vocal music only. Instrumental
talents in this part of the country being no less in number, the
Academy turned its attention to this field as well and on March
1, 2002, the Instrumental Division was introduced. It is
headed by Pandit Buddhadev Dasgupta, the eminent sarod maestro,
who has been associated with ITC-SRA for many years as a member
of its Expert Committee. Pandit Dasgupta trains students on the
sitar and sarod. As of August, 2005, the Instrumental Division
has been enriched by the presence of Pandit Manilal Nag, sitar
maestro.
Candidates
below 21 years of age are selected through an established
screening system. Students receive talim as scholars or in the general class
category. In keeping with the usual practice for all students at
ITC-SRA, they pay no fees and receive all in-house facilities.
As is the practice for students of vocal music, students will be
examined periodically vis-à-vis the Gradation Tests conducted
twice a year by the Experts Committee.
