Sunday, March 11, 2007. The Chowdiah Memorial Hall
witnessed a gripping finale to the 2-day ITC Sangeet Sammelan at
Bangalore. This was the Taal Vaadya Kacheri (ensemble) performance
by the threesome, Anindo Chatterjee (tabla), Bhawani Shankar (pakhawaj)
and Giridhar Udapa (ghatam). They were accompanied on the sarangi by
Faiaz Khan.
Anindo Chatterjee is one of India’s leading tabla exponents and the
torchbearer of the Farukkhabad Gharana. He is a leading disciple of
the legendary Padmabhushan Pandit Jnan Prakash Ghosh of Kolkata.
With an incredibly vast repertoire, distinctive for its crisp tonal
quality and sheer speed and control, he has received wide national
and international acclaim.
Trained on the pakhawaj and tabla since the age of 5 by his
illustrious father Pandit Babulalji, Bhawani Shankar had his
performance debut at the age of 16. A recipient of numerous awards
and a Grammy nominee, he has participated in almost all major music
conferences in India. He has also worked with the film industry and
has played for major music composers.
Giridhar Udupa was initiated by his father well-known Mridangist
Vidwan Ullur Nagendra Udupa. He is currently a disciple of Vidushi
Ghatam Sukanya Ramgopal and Vidwan Ghatam V.Suresh. Apart from the
ghatam he is equally adept at playing the mridangam, khanjira and
morsing. He renders konnakol (syllables) with aplomb. He has
performed both solo and as an accompanist to many eminent musicians
of today and performs in fusion, jazz, blues, flamenco, Celtic,
Latin and world music concerts as well as symphony orchestras and
jugalbandhis across the world. He has also worked with many leading
music directors.
