Born in a family of Kirtankars in Dharwad, Vinayak Torvi has become well known as a vocalist all over India.Gifted with a powerful and resonant voice with a rich concept of rhythm and melody, the young Torvi absorbed the ‘Samskaras’ of music from his parents. He started his lessons from the age of nine under Tammanna Gurav, and later continued with Narayanachar Dandapur and Narayan Rao Muzumdar of Dharwad. He then spent over twelve years receiving advanced taalim in both the Gwalior and Agra gayakis from Gayanacharya Gururao Deshpande. Torvi acquired his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in music from Karnataka University, Dharwad. As a post graduate student of the University, he had the rare fortune of receiving taalim from stalwarts like Vidushi Gangubai Hangal, Pandit Basavraj Rajguru and Pandit Mallikarjun Mansoor

With his unique voice culture, Vinayak Torvi is proficient in presenting varieties of ragas with due justice and is equally at ease with light classical and devotional music. He is well known for singing bhajans in Kannada, Hindi and Marathi. He has participated in all major music festivals in India and is an acclaimed Doordarshan and All India Radio artiste. He has established a public trust, in honor of his teacher Gururao Deshpande, and through this trust he sponsors music workshops and youth festivals to encourage and help young musicians in their careers. He has been particularly instrumental in transforming Bangalore into a prominent centre for Hindustani classical music. Vinayak Torvi's thirst for knowledge in music never seems quenched and he still seeks guidance from Pandit Bhimsen Joshi.
