Initiated into music by his father Late Pt. Malhar Kulkarni, Rupak Kulkarni went on to become a "Ganda Bandh" shagird of Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia since he was 12. He blossomed under the tutelage of the flute maestro to become a well known exponent of the Maihar Gharana. With arduous training and hard work, Rupak has mastered the Dhrupad, Khayal and Tantrakari ang equally well. His melodious recitals are always a treat combining Dhrupad and Khayal gayaki, innovative improvisation, superb breath control and dexterous finger work.
With concerts across the globe in countries such as Australia, America, Russia, Japan, Africa, England and France, Rupak`s performances have acquired a dignified maturity at an early age. His concert at "Asian Super Flautist Festival" in Japan is particularly a memorable one. In India, Rupak has performed at almost all prestigious music conferences.
Rupak has worked with renowned music directors from Bollywood and has collaborated with many renowned musicians from the West to create scintillating music. He has also made forays into fusion music and has had several albums released. He also composes for and performs with his own fusion group "Sonakshi".
